Cool Jigsaw Puzzles its all subjective!
Did you know that every day at least 12 people are searching on the internet for cool jigsaw puzzles! So what is a Cool Jigsaw Puzzle?
When I looked up the word cool in the dictionary, I found that it had at least 12 different meanings including being a rare surname in America. The one that most closely relates to the sentiment being used when people look on the internet for cool jigsaw puzzles is
adjective: fashionable and attractive at the time; often skilled or socially adept
Now as a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast and puzzle maker I could declare that all jigsaw puzzles are cool. From the definition above cool is linked to subjectivity by the word time in the definition. As time progresses so our perception may change and the object may become more or less cool.
Jigsaw puzzles have experienced this during their life time. When they were first invented which actually was not that long ago they were all the craze. Every one was a jigsaw puzzler. They even had jigsaw puzzle cafes where people would gather together and do puzzles.
However time has moved and jigsaw puzzles lost a lot of their cool aspect as it gave way to activities that are more interactive with probably less thought.
I suppose the question is; are jigsaw puzzles starting to become cool again? How many people actually do jigsaw puzzles compared to x-box? I am tending to believe that there is a resurgence in the popularity of the good old jigsaw puzzle, with the trash being dished up on TV. Jigsaws are starting to become cool again and they may even one day earn the nod.
But what is the Nod I hear you say. I came across the idea while reading an article by Kathy Sierra who talked about getting the nod from being part of a group who may own something that is exclusive and sets you apart in some sort of way. She says that the nod could mean some of the following
The Nod is a way for one user to tell another:
“Were smarter.”
Or
“Were risk-takers.”
Or
“Were more indie.”
Or
“Weve been at this from the beginning (unlike these clueless newbies).”
Or
“Were more concerned about the environment.”
Or
“Were more fun.”
The author related it to marketers and how they could create the nod for their product. Who knows perhaps jigsaws puzzles will regain their cool status and get the nod once more. It really was a great article and I encourage you to read it if you get the chance.
