In the Pattern in the Carpet – A Fascinating Look at Jigsaw Puzzles From Margaret Drabble
Best selling author Margaret Drabble looks at the strange world of, jigsaw puzzles, in her new book, In The Pattern in the Carpet. Drabble has published nearly 20 novels to date and in this book she examines the role jigsaws have played throughout her life.
The book is undoubtedly very well written, also examines the history of the ,jigsaw. Drabble also discusses jigsaw puzzles in their earliest incarnation as dissected maps. These early jigsaws were used as a teaching tool in Victorian times.
Drabble takes the reader back to her childhood and her visits to her Auntie. She recalls the, jigsaws, they completed.
Drabble also notes the importance of jigsaws in everyone’s childhoods. She describes how we rearrange objects into patterns to make sense of our past. Drabble also writes about the importance, jigsaws ,can play in reducing stress.
For the jigsaw puzzle enthusiast and occasional assemblers of ,jigsaws, this book will delight and transport the reader to a world far away fromfast – paced lives. It will inspire families to sit down together to do a jigsaw and for people on their own, the author’s book will re-enthuse anyone to start a puzzle.
We highly recommend this book. The world of jigsaws has largely been excluded over the years in publishing. It is good to see that Drabble’s book re-addresses this, especially as jigsaw puzzles continue to remain popular with both young and old.
